2019 Ford Ranger Preview

Overview

It's been quite a while since Ford's light truck, the Ranger, has been seen in the showroom. After it was pulled out of U.S. circulation back in 2011, people wondered if that would be the end of this midsized pickup. In the Ranger's absence, pickup trucks have been growing in size, strength, and luxuriousness, offering more hauling capabilities and opulent amenities than trucks of the past. This year, though, the Ranger has made a comeback and now represents the perfect middle ground for trucks. It's moderately sized yet capable enough for everyday work. Under its hood is a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder powerplant making 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, providing everything it needs to pull up to 7,500 pounds.

Trim Levels

The '19 Ranger comes in three trim levels: XL, XLT, and Lariat, each of which is available with either an extended cab (SuperCab) with a 6-foot bed or a crew cab with a 5-foot bed. All Rangers are powered by the aforementioned 2.3-liter engine paired to a ten-speed automatic transmission. The base XL's highlights include automatic headlights, a four-speaker audio system, an infotainment system with a 3.5-inch screen, and a rearview camera. In addition to what is offered with the XL, the XLT adds front and rear parking sensors, fog lights, an upgraded 4.2-inch screen for the infotainment system (which also gets Ford Sync capability and an extra USB port), keyless entry, remote tailgate locking, a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, and a six-speaker stereo system. Finishing the lineup is the Lariat, which adds LED headlights and tail lights, an LED cargo lamp, heated and power-adjustable front seats, leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, an 8-inch touchscreen interface complete with Ford Sync 3 technology, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto capability. It should also be noted that most of the equipment from the higher trims can be added as extras for the lower ones.

Optional Packages

Available packages that bundle sought-after equipment will allow you to make your Ranger just what you want it to be. For example, there is an FX4 Off-Road package available for all trim levels that includes off-road tires, upgraded shocks and suspension tuning, an electronically locking rear axle, tow hooks on the front, underbody skid plates, a terrain management system, and a Trail Control low-speed crawl control system. Then there is a Trailer Tow package that adds either a four-pin or a seven-pin wiring harness in addition to a Class IV trailer hitch.

Safety Features

Tough trucks need the added security of safety technology, too. Ford knows this, and that's why the active safety features begin on the base XL, with forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking coming standard. Both the XLT and the Lariat add Ford's Co-Pilot360 suite of advanced safety features, which includes lane keeping assist and blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Exclusive to the Lariat, though, is an optional navigation system, while the XL, XLT, and Lariat are all eligible for the optional adaptive cruise control.
