The 2020 Ford Ranger is built tough with steel bumpers, excellent driver visibility, and standout capabilities that make it ready to tackle just about any job on any terrain. As the smaller sibling to the F-150, it has plenty of power and the highest maximum payload and gasoline-engine torque in its class. It's also an excellent vehicle for towing, making it a natural choice for a smaller work vehicle. This capable midsized pickup just returned from a long hiatus last year, and so it doesn't show many design changes aside from some new paint choices (Iconic Silver, Rapid Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat, and Race Red) and a brand-new FX2 off-roading package.

Trim Levels

   

The 2020 Ford Ranger is offered in two body styles (SuperCrew with a 5-foot bed and SuperCab with a 6-foot bed, both with deep bed walls to keep stuff in) and three trim levels: XL, XLT, and Lariat. The XL trim supplies a bit more than basic equipment: 16-inch steel wheels, automatic headlights, a 2.3-inch productivity screen, FordPass Connect with a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth, and a four-speaker audio system. The XLT trim adds alloy wheels, cruise control, power mirrors, keyless entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 110-volt power outlet, a six-speaker sound system, and some crash-mitigating driver-assist technologies. At the top, the Lariat gets LED headlights, leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, intelligent access with push-button start, and heated driver and passenger seats.

   
   
   

Mechanical Specs and Fuel Economy

   

All 2020 Ranger models have a 2.3-liter twin-scroll turbocharged four-cylinder EcoBoost engine and an electronic 10-speed transmission with tow/haul mode. This powertrain is plenty strong, putting out 270 horsepower and a segment-leading 310 lb.-ft. of torque. The Ranger also has a best-in-class maximum payload of 1,860 pounds and can tow as much as 7,500 lb. when properly equipped with the trailer tow package. All Ranger models are standardly 4x2, but 4x4 can be ordered on any trim. Although it's a tough customer, it offers a smoother ride than most trucks thanks to its two-stage parabolic leaf springs, which replace the traditional multi-leaf springs that make bumps and jolts more pronounced.

   

You already know the 2020 Ford Ranger is powerful, but did you also know it gets over 20 mpg? The 4x2 model gets an EPA-estimated 21 mpg city/26 mpg highway, while the 4x4 models differ only slightly with an EPA-rated 20 mpg city/24 mpg highway. It also has an 18-gallon fuel tank, which equates to a 468-mile fuel range for the 4x2 and a 432-mile fuel range for the 4x4.

   
       

Safety and Technology

   

The 2020 Ford Ranger is no stranger to cutting-edge safety technology. The base Ranger comes standard with a pre-collision assist system with automatic emergency braking, a rearview camera, trailer sway control, curve control, and an SOS post-crash alert system. The XLT tacks on a reverse sensing system, a blind spot information system with cross-traffic alert and trailer monitoring, and a lane-keeping system. At the top of the heap, the Lariat trim adds a standard forward sensing system.
